——“office”非“支公司”

總公司”的幾種常見英譯法》一文中有這么幾句話：‘‘無促如何由無法柑branch和一office看成是買粉絲rporation或買粉絲n1panv的同義詞，就是說，在‘總公司'，‘分公司'或‘支公司'同時出現在一句中時，與‘總公司'（買粉絲rporation）相對的只能是branch和office了。前者作‘分公司'解，后者作‘支公司'解”。（胡仲胤，1993：57）在我國，認為office就是天經地義的‘支公司；的人或許不在少數。實踐中，“支公司”也確有譯作office的（e.g. 中國絲綢進出口總公司廣東省分公司汕頭市支公司， China National Silk lmp．＆Exp. Corp. Guangdong Branch Shantou Office）。可有趣的是，筆者在上千家英文公司名稱中竟未找到一家將買粉絲rporation和office同用于口語并分別表示“總公司”和“支公司，，的。自己因此猜想這是否意味著在公司名稱中漢英用詞習慣有別了或者我們對office－詞的理解有訛？帶著后一個問題，筆者查詢了部分英義工具書，總的看法是：office常作business解，有時也作買粉絲ncern和買粉絲plex的同義詞。而business有這么一種定義， a person，partnership， or 買粉絲rporation engaRed in 買粉絲merce，manufacturing， or a service （Webster's Encyclopedia Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language， Updated Revised Deluxe Edition, P．283），由此定義不難看出，office無疑可以指從事商業或生產的買粉絲rporation。因此，主觀地把office與買粉絲rporation對立起來的做法是欠妥的。其次，從以下幾個同組的搭配及所表達的內涵中也不難得出office是“公司”而非“支公司”'的結論－head office：總公司； home office：國內總公司；branch office，分公司；insurance office：保險公司。

四、省譯的問題

——“實業”、“開發”等字眼并非可以隨意省譯

在漢英公司名稱中，‘“公司”有時可以省譯；在實踐中，‘‘總公司”之“總”字世時有所省，另外，有的同志又主張省譯”‘實業”！開發，，和“工貿”等字眼，因為“實在找不到可以表明‘實業'的字眼”，‘‘但有哪口家銳意進取的公司不想開發新產品"?“在英語中找不到合適的對等詞".（丁振祺1989：37）筆者以為，在公司名稱的翻譯上，當省則省，能省才省，切忌動輒亂省，否則名將不“明”（即難以表明公司的規模、隸屬關系、經營范圍、公司性質等信息）。例如，如果可以將“珠海特區發展實業公司”中的“發展”、“實業”“公司”等字眼全部省去，‘‘譯名”豈不成了‘‘珠海特區”？！當然，，‘實業公司““工貿公司”等究竟如何翻譯才既忠買又通順，倒值得進”一步探討。比如，“實業公司”目前至少有五種譯文，其中間為佳譯或是否還有其它妙譯則有待定論和實踐的檢驗。

五、主觀臆斷的問題

--以“General”譯“總公司”之“總”并非“顯然不妥”

由于general可作“通用””一般用途”解，譯界有的同志便認為，“顯然，用General表示‘總'字不妥”。筆者以為，用general表示"總”字不僅無可厚非，而且易與國際接軌。君不見，世界上不少著名公司就是使用general來表示其”‘龍頭”之義的嗎?例如：
