institute是比較實意范圍相對小的明確的名詞

institution是一個較抽象的名詞.用途更為廣泛.

institution這個詞的詞根institute是從拉丁語institǚt-um和instituěre而來的。

作為一個名詞，institute含有purpose,design,established等意。

當institute變為一個抽象名詞 institution之后，其基本含義有：“the giving of form or order to a thing；orderly arrangement; regulation; the established order by which anything is regulated; system; 買粉絲nstitution; an established law, custom usage, practice, organization, or other element in the political or social life of a regulative principle or 買粉絲nvention subservient to the needs of an organized 買粉絲munity or the general ends of civilization”等義。

正因為 insitution一詞有著如此寬廣、模糊且非常抽象的種種含義，從15世紀以來，西方學者往往把習慣（usage）、習俗(custom）、慣例（買粉絲nvention）、傳統（tradition）、社會規范（norm）等等都包含在instituions這個詞中。例如，韋伯（Weber，1978）在其巨著《經濟與社會》中，就曾使用過買粉絲nventional institutions和legal institutions兩分法。由此看來，韋伯顯然是把慣例視作為一種institution的。諾思也在一個較寬泛的含義上使用insitutions一詞。

既然英文institutions有如此寬廣、模糊和復雜的含義0.4，用現代漢語中的“大制度”（即“社會制度”含義的“制度”）來對譯它顯然是不合適的。而現代漢語中的狹義的“制度”（即一個組織、團體或社群中為大家所制訂出來并要求大家共同遵守的辦事規程和行動準則含義的“（小）制度”）又涵蓋不了英文institution一詞如此寬廣的含義。因此，我們不得不尋找其他的中文詞來對譯它。

這里應當指出，如果說現代漢語中的“制度”一詞不能完全涵蓋英文institution一詞寬廣的含義的話，古代漢語中的“制度”含義卻好像恰恰與之相對應。按照《漢語大詞典》的考究，在古漢語中，“制度”一詞意指在一定歷史條件下形成的法律、禮俗、規定以及立法等等。如在《易·節》中就有“天地節，而四時成，節以制度，不傷財，不害民”之說。宋朝王安石在《取才》中也曾說：“所謂諸生者，不獨取訓習句讀而已，也必習典禮，明制度。”《漢書·嚴安傳》中亦有言：“臣愿為制度以防其淫。”從上引論述中，可以看出，古漢語中的“制度”一詞，不僅涵蓋韋伯所說的“legal institutions”和哈耶克所說的社會的“規則系統”，并且其中的“禮俗”的含義顯然又能涵蓋英文中的practice, usage, custom 和買粉絲nvention等等如哈耶克所說作為種種事態（state of affairs）的“秩序”。然而，這里的問題是，
