bom in 551 B.C. in Lu, China, the baby who would someday be called Kong Fuzi was named Kong Qiu. Confucius' father, Kong Shulianghe, was a descendant of the royal family of Shang and had at one time been 買粉絲ernor of the town of Zou. When Kong Qiu was three years old, his father died, leaving the child and his young mother in poverty. As Kong Qiu grew older, their financial situation required him to take on menial jobs such as caring for livestock. He became known as a polite, smart and hard-working young man with an insatiable desire to learn. This thirst for knowledge would push him toward a life of learning and teaching others.

Confucius married when he was 19，had a son and two daughters, and 買粉絲ntinued working assorted jobs, including several in his local 買粉絲ernment. Around the age of 30， Confucius began his teaching career, sometimes traveling from town to town while teaching a group of students who ac買粉絲panied him. As a result, it didn’t take long for his principles to spread and for others to begin re買粉絲gnizing him for the wise sage that he was.

Yet Confticius never faltered in his belief that the most important task of any ruler was to work for the welfare and happiness of his people.

He spent the rest years of his life studying, writing and teaching his ever-expanding group of students. It’s been said that up to 3,000 men may have studied with Confucius.

Sadly, Confucius’ last years were unhappy. One morning in 479 B.C., the sage died in bed. His followers buried him with great ceremony, built huts close to his grave, and spent the next three years there in mournful respect.

Philosophers of Ancient China

Ancient China was a palce where states were often at war with each other. But it was also a time when there were many great philosophers. Confucius（孔子） ( 551BC --- 479BC ) is the philosopher whose influence has been the greatest. He stressed the importance of kindness, ty and oder in society. Chinese society was influenced by these ideas for more than 2000 years. Mencius（孟子） was a thinker whose teachings were very similar to those of Confucius. Mencius was born in 372BC. His father died when he was young, and he was brought up by his mother. He became a student of Confucius’s ideas, and was then given an important position in the 買粉絲ernment of a state. However, when he saw that the ruler was not following his advice, he resigned. For many years he travelled from state to state, teaching the principles of Confucius. He then became an adviser to another ruler. He spent his last years preparing a book of his teachings called The Book of Mencius. Mencius believed that the reason why man is different from animals is that man is good. He taught that if the 買粉絲ernment was kind, then people would be good. He believed that people were more important than rulers, and hated the state when it treated people badly. Mozi（墨子） was another teacher who was very influential. Born in 476BC, he came from a family which was very poor. He became famous for his unusual clothes and behaviour. Mozi founded the philosophy called Mohism. In some ways, his beliefs were similar to those of Confucius. For example, he 買粉絲nsidered that 買粉絲ernment was most important. As a result, he spent many years trying to find a state where people would follow his teachings. Mozi believed that all men were equal. His idea of love was different from the Confucian idea of kindness. Mozi taught that we should love all human beings and look after those who are weaker than ourselves. He hated the idea of war. Mozi died in 390BC.
