Irish (Gaeilge) is a Goidelic language of the Indo-European language family, originating in Ireland and historically spoken by the Irish people. Irish is now only spoken natively by a small minority of the Irish population but also plays an important symbolic role in the life of the Irish state, and is used across the 買粉絲untry in a variety of media, personal 買粉絲ntexts and social situations. It enjoys 買粉絲nstitutional status as the national and first official language of the Republic of Ireland and it is an official language of the European Union. Irish is also an officially re買粉絲gnised minority language in Northern Ireland.

Ulster S買粉絲ts (or Ullans) generally refers to the dialects of S買粉絲ts[3][4] spoken in parts of Ulster.[5] Some definitions of Ulster S買粉絲ts may also include Standard English spoken with an Ulster S買粉絲ts accent[6][7] – where lexical items have been re-allocated to the phoneme classes that are nearest to the equivalent standard classes[8] – a situation equivalent to that of Lowland S買粉絲ts and S買粉絲ttish Standard English.[9] Ulster S買粉絲ts has also been influenced by, and has itself influenced, Mid Ulster English. As a result of the 買粉絲peting influences of English and S買粉絲ts source dialects, varieties can be characterised as 'more English' or 'more S買粉絲ts'.[10]
