從12歲時就開始寫歌，和好友組過團，叫NAMESTE。曾經加入學校的合唱團，但被踢出來，因為合唱團的老師說他，不會唱歌。雖然是老么，3個哥哥一個姐姐，但他做個各式各樣的工作。在鞋店打過工，進入BOYZONE時還在學校念書，剛成立時與團員晚上在校園和青少年常去的俱樂部表演，每天作二到三場的演出，但是在空閑時，還幫父親修卡車，幫忙母親的美發沙龍！一直的夢想是成為像TAKE THAT那么紅的團員，直到成為BZ一員，成為主唱，他才真正找到自己心目中的理想事業。

1998年2月，BZ正在錄制WHERE WE BELONG，他的母親因乳癌去世。他幾乎無法完成聲音配唱的部分，RONAN寫THIS IS WHERE I BELONG，唱出自己的成長心情。他后來設立Marie Keating Cancer Awareness Fund,致力乳癌防治。4月BZ的單曲ALL THAT I NEED 直沖冠軍。30日，RONAN與大他2歲的模特女友YVONNE在加勒比海的小島結婚。同年底RONAN被權威偶像雜志讀者選為“最佳衣著男士”、“流行王子”、“最想要的男人”！而他也從不受一般媒體重視的偶像派成為受到重視的藝人。

雖然身為BZ的主唱，一直都是最受歡迎BZ成員，但RONAN早在幾年前就想要發展個人音樂事業。1997年5月RONAN被選為“歐洲歌曲比賽”主持人，同年接下EMA（歐洲MTV頒獎禮）主持，1998年11月主持“世界小姐”，后來成為WESTLIFE的經紀人，但是他自己說這些都是附加的，最終目標是成為一位頂尖的詞曲創作歌手。而直到1999年初，“新娘百分百”電影導演捧著一首歌請RONAN主唱，他才能實現長久以來的想望。

2000年，BZ的成員以“單飛不解散”的形式開始各自的個人事業。RONAN的新單曲唱片“LIFE IS A ROLLERCOASTER”與7月19日正式發行，而他的首張個人專輯在7月30日推出！
