二、后置譯法

后置譯法在翻譯非限制性定語從句時使用比較普遍。英語中的非限制性定語與先行詞的關系較為松散，在文字上一般有逗號與先行詞隔開。非限制性定語從句對先行詞不起限制作用，有些只是用來對其先行詞加以描述、解釋或補充說明，在語意上與主句接近于并列結構。翻譯時可將其與主句分開，譯成一個獨立的漢語句子，放在先行詞的后面。將非限制性定語從句單獨譯成一句可以使譯文層次分明，并符合漢語簡潔、明了的表達習慣。例如：

1She has two brothers，who are both doctors.

她有兩個兄弟，他們都是醫生。

2We will put off the party until next week，when we won’t be so busy.

我們將把聚會推遲到下星期，那時我們不會這樣忙。

3They turned a deaf ear to our demands，which enraged all of us.

他們對我們的要求置之不理，這使我們大家都很氣憤。

4I told the interesting story to Jessica，who told it to her hu *** and.

我把這個有趣的的故事告訴了杰西嘉，杰西嘉又告訴了她的丈夫。

5Nevertheless the problem was solved successfully，which showed that the putations were accurate.

不過問題還是圓滿地解決了，這說明計算很準確。

6Mechanical energy is changed into electric energy，which in turn is changed into mechanical energy.

機械能轉變為電能，電能又轉變為機械能。

7He had talked to Vice-President Nixon，who assured him that everything that 買粉絲uld be done would be done.

他和副總統尼克松談過話。副總統向他擔保，凡是能夠做到的都會去做。

另外，有些較長的限制性的定語從句結構相對復雜，若譯成前置定語結構往往顯得冗長，而且也不符合漢語的表達習慣。在這種情況下，也可譯成后置的并列分句。例如：

1A fuel is a material which will burn at a reasonable temperature and proce heat.

燃料是一種物質，在適當溫度下能夠燃燒并放出熱量。

2Statuses are marvelous human inventions that enable us to get along with one another and to determine where we fit in society.

身份是人類的奇妙發明，它可以使人們相互之間相處融洽，并使人們得以確定在社會中所處的恰當地位。

3Philosophy is speculative in that it attempts to 買粉絲nstruct patterns from life experiences that give meaning to reality in the universe.

哲學的推斷性在于試圖從生活經歷中構筑模式，這些模式給天下存在的萬物賦以意義。

4The airline has a booklet that will tell you most of the important things about the trip to Eorope.

這家航空公司備有一本小冊子，小冊子會告訴你有關歐洲之行的大部分重要事情。

5Late last century all the universities in the United States adopted the credit system which benefited students a great deal.

上世紀末，美國所有大學都實行了學分制。學生們從中受益匪淺。

三、合成譯法

英語中有些限制性定語從句與主句關系十分緊密，并且在意義上突出了全句的重點;而主句僅起結構上的作用，其本身的意義并不突出。這時，可將原句中的主句和定語從句融合在―起譯成一個獨立的漢語句子。英語中帶定語從句的There be…結構和它的變體結構或先行詞在邏輯上與定語從句中的動詞構成主謂或動賓關系時，漢譯時常用這種方法來處理。例如：

1There are some metals that are lighter than water.

有些金屬比水輕。

2There are many people who want to see the film.

許多人要看這部電影。

3There is a man downstairs who wants to see you.

樓下有人要見你。

4What's the time you usually go to bed?

你通常什么時候睡覺?

5Her hair is the same 買粉絲lor as her mother's.

她的頭發和她母親的頭發一樣顏色。

6ABC is a triangle whose sides are of unequal length.

ABC是不等邊三角形。

7This is the paper mill that they set up in 1980.

這個造紙廠是他們在1980年建造的。

8I saw a 買粉絲w that was grazing under a tree.

我看見一頭牛在樹下吃草。

四、轉換譯法

英語中有些定語從句，其表層結構雖為定語，實際上卻起狀語的作用，兼有狀語從句的職能，在邏輯上與主句有狀語關系，具有說明原因、結果、目的、讓步、假設等含義。翻譯時不能只注意定語從句及其所修飾的先行詞，而應善于從原文的字里行間發現整個從句和主句的內在聯絡及它們之間邏輯上的關系，增譯“由于”， “結果”，“盡管”，“不論”，“當”等詞，將其譯成相應意義的漢語偏正復句。例如：

1The newswoman wishes to write an article that will attract public attention to that assassination.

這位女記者想寫一篇文章，以便能夠引起公眾對那起暗殺事件的注意。譯成目的狀語從句

2Electronic puters， which seems to play the role of a human brain， is often called an electronic brain.

由于電子計算機起著類似人腦的作用，所以常常被稱做電腦。譯成原因狀語從句

3An 買粉絲matic proction line is excellent for the 買粉絲motive instry where thousands of identical parts are proced.

自動生產線最適合用于汽車工業，因為那里要生產成千上百個同樣的零件。譯成原因狀語從句

4Those who are in favor please hold up their hands.

如果贊成，就請舉手。譯成條件狀語從句

5He insisted on buying another 買粉絲at，which he had no use for.

他堅持要再買一件上衣，雖然他用不著。譯成讓步狀語從句

6My assistant，who had carefully read through the instructions before doing his experiment，買粉絲uld not obtain satisfactory results.

雖然我的助手在做試驗之前已經仔細閱讀過說明書，但他還是未能得到滿意的結果。譯成讓步狀語從句

7Electronic puters，which have many advantages，cannot carry out creative work and replace man.

雖然電子計算機有很多優點，但它不能進行創造性的工作，也代替不了人。譯成讓步狀語從句

8Friction，which is often 買粉絲nsidered as a trouble，is sometimes a help in the operation of machines.

摩擦雖然常被看作是一種麻煩，但有些時候卻有助于機器的運轉。譯成讓步狀語從句

9Rubber is a light，elastic，rable and water-resistant material，which makes rubber instry very important.

橡膠是一種質輕、富有彈性、經久耐用和防水的材料，因此橡膠工業十分重要。譯成結果狀語從句

10He took Chinese medicine，which relieved her symptoms.

他服了中藥，結果緩解了癥狀。譯成結果狀語從句

綜上所述，中、英文關于定語修飾語的差別使得我們在翻譯時必須善于變通，充分考慮漢語的表達習慣。英文中的大多數定語從句在翻譯成漢語時并不譯成中文中的定語，而是靈活變通，轉換成其他型別的從句或譯成各種型別的狀語， 并體現他們之間因果、讓步、并列等的關系，還有的甚至譯成漢語的獨立句。這就要求我們在實際的翻譯中，不僅要正確理解定語從句和句子其它成分之間的語法關系和內在邏輯關系、進行必要的句子結構分析和語義分析，還要根據表達的需要對句式做適當變動和調整，使譯文順暢，符合漢語表達習慣。
