英語中存在著大量的短語動詞,對于它們,同樣可以通過對比來記憶。如be good at與do well in; take pride in與be proud of , pride oneself on;又如,give a deep impression to與have a deep impression on; be able to 與be capable of, play a trick on與put a joke on及make fun of; in the meantime與at the same time;persuade (sb) to (do sth)與talk (sb) into (doing sth); a variety of與all kinds of; the ghost of與a little及the slightest等等。能夠通過對比來記憶的短語動詞或副詞很多,只要我們在學習中注意歸納對比,要記住它們并不難。
另外,我們還可以通過編一些口訣來幫助記單詞,如“點頭yes搖頭no ,來是買粉絲e去是go ,你是you,我是I,咱倆再見good_bye。對于英語語法,同樣可以編一些口訣幫助記憶,如為了記住后面只能接動名詞的詞時,我們可以編出下面這個順口溜,“避免錯過(莫)延期,冒險逃脫(己)原諒,建議練習(要)完成,否定承認(又)妒忌,喜歡想像禁不住,保持忍受(還)在意,習慣于認為想不到,盼望期待(多)注意,專心致志(應)包括,定下心來欣賞(它),禁止提到(該)阻止,值得面對(和)允許”。這樣的口訣已編好的有很多,我們在學習過程中也可以自己編一些或者是對已編好的進行修改增補,使之趨完美。
以上所說的是地記憶單詞的方法,這些方法側重于記憶詞形,如果要側重于記憶詞意,則要運用整個記憶法了,即把單詞放到句子、句群中去記。因為一個單詞在句子或句群中就不再是孤立的單位了,它總是與句子的前后部分或前后句子有著某種聯系,因此把單詞置于句子或句群中有助于我們更好地掌握其意義。整體記憶單詞的另一個方法是讀一些用英語寫的書,邊讀邊查字典,但不是一遇到生詞就馬上去查,而是先看完整個句子或幾個句子,根據上下文先猜測詞義,然后再查字典來印證并給出單詞重音(根據重音和拼讀規則即可知道單詞的讀音,因此沒有必要抄下音標。當然,有些單詞發音特殊,那就必須認真地抄下全部音標,否則會給以后糾正讀音帶來很大的困難),每讀四、五面后就回過頭來把前面的再讀一兩遍。如果在后面的閱讀中遇到前面已經出現過的單詞,就努力回憶其意思,回憶不起來則再查一次。另外,若已知詞義不能使句子通順流暢,也應再查字典找出合適的詞義。全書看完后再從頭至尾讀一遍以鞏固新單詞。在這樣的書中,作者為了避免重復,會大量使用同近義詞,讀時應注意歸納并對比記憶。
要學好英語,掌握大量的詞匯是必須的,是最基本的要求,但僅僅掌握大量詞匯是不夠的,還必須學會豐富多彩的英語句型。句型是語言表達的框架和基礎骨架。精確掌握與靈活運用英語句型是達到掌握并熟練運用英語進行交際的重要環節。采用不同的句型或句式翻譯同一句漢語然后進行對比是靈活運用英語實現正確的表達的很好的方法。如:“他病了,沒去上學”就有以下七種譯法:①He was ill. He didn’t go to school.(兩個單句) ②He was ill, and/so he didn’t go to school(并列句) ③He didn’t go to school because he was ill.(原因狀語從句) ④He didn’t go to school because of his illness.(短語介詞because of后接名詞,相當于because引導的狀語從句) ⑤As he was ill, he didn’t go to school.(原因狀語從句) ⑥Bing ill, he didn’t go to school.(分詞結構表原因) ⑦The reason why he didn’t go to school was that he was ill.(定語從句和表語從句) 又如,“買這本字典花了他五元錢”也有以下六種譯法:⑴用物作主語①This dictionary 買粉絲st him five yuan. ⑵用人作主語②He spent five yuan on this dictionary. ③He paid five yuan for this dictionary. ④He bought this dictionary for five yuan. ⑤He used five yuan to buy this dictionary. ⑶用不定式作主語(it作形式主語)⑥It 買粉絲st him five yuan to buy this dictionary.這個例子還讓我們很清楚地看出了pay…for/spend和買粉絲st之間的區別。再如,“她不僅摔斷了腿而且肩膀也受了傷”可譯為①She not only broke her leg but also hurt her arms ②She hurt her arms as well as breaking her leg.這個一句多譯的例子可以幫助我們清楚地了解not only…but also 與as well as的區別:1.as well as強調前者,而not only…but also強調后者,故(1)它們所連接的詞位置相反才能保持意思上的一致;(2)連接句子主語時謂語動詞的數在as well as中由前者決定,在only…but also中由后者決定,即就近一致。2.連接動詞時only…but also需保持前后結構上的對稱,即前后一致,而as well as后面的動詞則總是用-ing形式。通過一句多譯,我們將會發現,英語中狀語從句、定語從句、名詞性從句(即主語從句、賓語從句、表語從句、同位語從句)和非謂語動詞(即分詞、動名詞、不定式)、with復合結構、獨立主格結構以及強調句、倒裝句、虛擬語氣句之間是可以相互轉換的。另外,我們還可以利用短語動詞或短語介詞把復合句、并列句等變為簡單句,這就是英語的靈活性之所在。關于這一點,茲再舉數例加以說明:1.他在家一直等到我回來①He didn’t leave my home until I came back.(時間狀語從句) ②He stayed in my home until I came back. ③It was not until I came back that he left my home.(強調句) ④Not until I came back did he leave my home.(倒裝句) 2.在她哥哥的允許下,他帶走了那個女孩。①Permitted by her brother, he took the girl away.(分詞結構) ②With her brother’s permission, he took the girl away.(介詞短語)3.隨著時光的流逝,…①As time went on/passed by,…(時間狀語從句)②With time going on/passing by,…(with復合結構)4.房子前面有棵樹,樹梢比其它樹高出很多.①In front of the house is a tall tree. Its top is well above the tops of the other trees. (兩個單句)② In front of the house is a tall tree, its top well above the tops of the other trees. ③ In front of the house is a tall tree, whose top is well above the tops of the other trees. ④ In front of the house is a tall tree, the top of which is well above the tops of the other trees. ⑤In front of the house is a tall tree, of which the top is well above the tops of the other trees. 5如果時間允許的話,… ① If time permits,…(條件狀從)② Time permitting,…(獨立主格結構)6聽到這個消息后他很吃驚①He was surprised when he heard the news .(時間狀從) ② Hearing the news ,he was surprised .(分詞結構)③He was surprised at the news .(系表結構的短語動詞) 7.做完作業后,我們…①After we finished our homework , we…(時間狀從) ②Our homework done, we …(獨立主格結構)。8.我們都知道太陽比月亮大。①As we all know, the sun is bigger than the moon(定語從句) ②The sun is bigger than the earth, which/as we all know(定語從句) ③The sun is bigger than the earth, and we all know it(并列句) ④That the sun is bigger than the earth is known to us all.(主語從句) ⑤It is known to us all that the sun is bigger than the earth(it作形式主語的主語從句) ⑥What is known to us all is that the sun is bigger than the earth(主語從句
