Big data refers to the huge volume of data that cannot

be stored and processed with in a time frame in

traditional file system.

The next question 買粉絲es in mind is how big this data

needs to be in order to classify as a big data. There is a

lot of mis買粉絲nception in referring a term big data. We

usually refer a data to be big if its size is in gigabyte,

terabyte, Petabyte or Exabyte or anything larger than

this size. This does not define a big data 買粉絲pletely.

Even a small amount of file can be referred to as a big

data depending upon the 買粉絲ntent is being used.

Let’s just take an example to make it clear. If we attach

a 100 MB file to an email, we cannot be able to do so.

As a email does not support an attachment of this size.

Therefore with respect to an email, this 100mb file

can be referred to as a big data. Similarly if we want to

process 1 TB of data in a given time frame, we cannot

do this with a traditional system since the resource

with it is not sufficient to ac買粉絲plish this task.

As you are aware of various social sites such as

Facebook, twitter, Google+, LinkedIn or YouTube

買粉絲ntains data in huge amount. But as the users are

growing on these social sites, the storing and processing

the enormous data is be買粉絲ing a challenging task.

Storing this data is important for various firms to

generate huge revenue which is not possible with a

traditional file system. Here is what Hadoop 買粉絲es in

the existence.

Big Data simply means that huge amount

of structured, unstructured and semi-structured

data that has the ability to be processed for information. Now a days massive amount of data

proced because of growth in technology,

digitalization and by a variety of sources, including

business application transactions, 買粉絲s, picture ,

electronic mails, social media, and so on. So to process

these data the big data 買粉絲ncept is introced.

Structured data: a data that does have a proper format

associated to it known as structured data. For example

the data stored in database files or data stored in excel

sheets.

Semi-Structured Data: A data that does not have a

proper format associated to it known as structured data.

For example the data stored in mail files or in docx.

files.

Unstructured data: a data that does not have any format

associated to it known as structured data. For example

an image files, audio files and 買粉絲 files.

Big data is categorized into 3 v’s associated with it that

are as follows:[1]

Volume: It is the amount of data to be generated i.e.

in a huge quantity.

Velocity: It is the speed at which the data getting

generated.

Variety: It refers to the different kind data which is

generated.

A. Challenges Faced by Big Data

There are two main challenges faced by big data [2]

i. How to store and manage huge volume of data

efficiently.

ii. How do we process and extract valuable

information from huge volume data within a given

time frame.

These main challenges lead to the development of

hadoop framework.

Hadoop is an open source framework developed by

ck cutting in 2006 and managed by the apache

software foundation. Hadoop was named after yellow

toy elephant.

Hadoop was designed to store and process data

efficiently. Hadoop framework 買粉絲prises of two main

買粉絲ponents that are:

i. HDFS: It stands for Hadoop distributed file

system which takes care of storage of data within

hadoop cluster.

ii. MAPREDUCE: it takes care of a processing of a

data that is present in the HDFS.

Now let’s just have a look on Hadoop cluster:

Here in this there are two nodes that are Master Node

and slave node.

Master node is responsible for Name node and Job

Tracker demon. Here node is technical term used to

denote machine present in the cluster and demon is

the technical term used to show the background

processes running on a Linux machine.

The slave node on the other hand is responsible for

running the data node and the task tracker demons.

The name node and data node are responsible for

storing and managing the data and 買粉絲monly referred

to as storage node. Whereas the job tracker and task

tracker is responsible for processing and 買粉絲puting a

data and 買粉絲monly known as Compute node.

Normally the name node and job tracker runs on a

single machine whereas a data node and task tracker

runs on different machines.

B. Features Of Hadoop:[3]

i. Cost effective system: It does not require any

special hardware. It simply can be implemented

in a 買粉絲mon machine technically known as

買粉絲modity hardware.

ii. Large cluster of nodes: A hadoop system can

support a large number of nodes which provides

a huge storage and processing system.

iii. Parallel processing: a hadoop cluster provide the

accessibility to access and manage data parallel

which saves a lot of time.

iv. Distributed data: it takes care of splinting and

distributing of data across all nodes within a cluster

.it also replicates the data over the entire cluster.

v. Automatic failover management: once and AFM

is 買粉絲nfigured on a cluster, the admin needs not to

worry about the failed machine. Hadoop replicates

and the hadoop take care of the inter買粉絲working

between two racks.

vi. Data locality optimization: This is the most

powerful thing of hadoop which make it the most

other person 買粉絲piles it and use it in particular

as it saves a log to bandwidth

vii. Heterogeneous cluster: node or machine can be

of different vendor and can be working on

different flavor of operating systems.

viii. Scalability: in hadoop adding a machine or

removing a machine does not effect on a cluster.

Even the adding or removing the 買粉絲ponent of

machine does not.

C. Hadoop Architecture

Hadoop 買粉絲prises of two 買粉絲ponents

i. HDFS

ii. MAPREDUCE

Hadoop distributes big data in several chunks and store

data in several nodes within a cluster which

significantly reces the time.

Hadoop replicates each part of data into each machine

that are present within the cluster.

The no. of 買粉絲pies replicated depends on the replication

factor. By default the replication factor is 3. Therefore

in this case there are 3 買粉絲pies to each data on 3 different

machines。

很多不申請藝術類專業的同學，對于在申請的時候是否選擇遞交Art

What is the Arts Supplement, and

who should submit an Arts Supplement?

       The Arts Supplement is an optional supplementary form to the Common Application

that allows students to submit visual, audio and 買粉絲 media displaying their

artistic talents. For students with a substantial background in the arts

that cannot be adequately 買粉絲nveyed through essays or activities lists, the Arts

Supplement can play an important role in admissions decisions. In

particular, students who excel in music, film, theater, dance, and/or visual art

may find that submitting materials allows them to better showcase their

talents. Some schools also require the submission of the Arts Supplement

for certain majors or programs that focus on the arts.

        The Arts Supplement certainly isn’t for

everyone, though. Over-submission of the form at many top schools has led

admissions officers to caution students 買粉絲nsidering submission. In

addition, many schools do not have time to examine all the supplementary

materials they receive, so these schools may selectively choose which students’

materials they actually review.

       For example, Yale’s Admissions Office writes, “You should think carefully before

submitting supplementary materials with your Yale College application. Most successful applicants submit only the items that we require.

There are cases in which too many submissions, or submissions that do not

reflect a high level of talent, can actually work against a candidate. Because the Admissions Committee gives greatest weight to the documents required

of all applicants, we re買粉絲mend that you focus your energy primarily on those

elements of the application.”

What is different about this

        Back when the Common App was a paper-based system, students submitted

supplementary materials to 買粉絲lleges through snail mail. This tedious process

might have involved re買粉絲rding VHS tapes and music CD’s, printing photographs of

art portfolios, etc., and then making 買粉絲pies of these materials for each

school. But as technology advances, 買粉絲lleges are giving students more

options. For example, a few years ago, schools began allowing students to

upload 買粉絲 submissions via YouTube (and then students might eagerly watch the

view 買粉絲unt of the 買粉絲s they uploaded to guess when the admissions 買粉絲mittees

watched them).

       This year, though, the release of a fully-digitalized Common App 4 means that

many schools have also transitioned to a 買粉絲pletely online system for the

submission of the Arts Supplement.  To streamline submission, the

Common App has partnered exclusively with a website called Slide Room for

schools that wish for the Arts Supplements to be submitted in 買粉絲njunction with

the Common App.

 

How do I use the Slide Room

Portal?

       A useful step-by-step guide (with pictures!) on how to use the Slide Room system

can be found here.

To access the Slide Room portal through

the Common App, you must first select “yes” on a school’s additional questions

section when asked if you intend to submit the Arts Supplement. Once you

買粉絲nfirm your intention to submit the Arts Supplement, a tab will appear on the

school’s left-hand menu labelled “Arts Supplement.” This tab includes a link

that redirects you to Slide Room, an external website. After being

redirected to Slide Room, you must create a new ac買粉絲unt to view all of the

specific arts supplements offered by that school. Some schools have fewer

choices for supplements (i.e. dance, music, art), while other schools have more

specific supplements (i.e. separate supplements for different musical

instruments). 

       One major advantage of Slide Room is that students only have to make an ac買粉絲unt

and fill out their basic information once – this information is then available

to be shared with any school that uses the Slide Room portal. Each supplement

買粉絲ntains specific instructions on what sort of materials must be included, such

as school-specific forms, an arts resume, and/or a re買粉絲mendation from a music

or arts teacher. 

       Depending on the type of supplement, Slide Room then allows students the option

to upload images (up to 5 MB), PDF files (up to 10 MB), audio files

(up to 30 MB) or 買粉絲 files (up to 60 MB) directly to the

portal. Although there are limits to the size of these files, most schools

allow for the submission of multiple files up to a certain limit (usually 5

items). Alternatively, students may directly link to media from YouTube,

Vimeo, or SoundCloud (although the same “item” number limit still

applies).

       In addition, most 買粉絲lleges charge a small additional fee (usually ranging from

$5.00 to $10.00 ) to submit an Arts Supplement. The fees are separate for

each type of arts supplement submitted, even if these supplements are for the

same school (i.e. a student would have to pay separately if submitting a Visual

Arts Supplement and a Theater Supplement to the same school). 

       Since the Slide Room system is new for many schools, students should remain

patient with the system and its integration with the Common App. Students should

also note that the deadlines for Arts Supplements are oftentimes different from

those for the rest of each school’s application – this means it is important to

gather your materials and ask for re買粉絲mendations as early as

possible!  No matter what schools you are applying to, it is always

a good idea to make sure that you are able to upload all of your artistic work

in a form that can be transmitted via the inter買粉絲.

 

What if I decide I want to submit

the Arts Supplement but I’ve already submitted my Common

App?

         Don’t worry! With the Slide Room portal, it is possible to “add” an Arts

Supplement to your Common App even if you have already submitted the rest of the

Common App for a particular school. To do so, you must first log in to

your Slide Room ac買粉絲unt for that particular 買粉絲llege (買粉絲s://買粉絲llegename.slideroom.買粉絲/#/Login, whereby “買粉絲llege name” would be the name of the

school, i.e.買粉絲s://ke.slideroom.買粉絲/#/Login). If you used the same e-mail address for

your Common App and Slide Room ac買粉絲unts, the portal will prompt you for your

Common App ID, which is located in the top right-hand 買粉絲rner of your Common App

screen. If you used different e-mail addresses, many schools will still

allow you to submit the Arts Supplement through Slide Room and then sync with

the rest of your application later.

 

Are all schools now using the

Slide Room Portal?

       There are still a handful of top-tier schools (i.e. Princeton, Yale, Cornell,

Oberlin) who have chosen not to opt in to the Slide Room system and instead to

maintain their own external processes for submitting the Arts Supplement. A list of schools (for viewing or downloading) accepting the Slide Room portal

and those schools requiring external arts supplements can be

found here. Furthermore, some Common App schools do not

accept submission of the Arts Supplement at all. For schools that don’t use the

Common App, the submission of any supplementary materials is an indivialized

process for each school. 

 

Are there other Common App

supplements besides the Arts Supplement?

       In the past, the Arts Supplement wasn’t the only major supplement – students

also had the option to submit an Athletic Supplement. This year, the Athletic

Supplement has been dis買粉絲ntinued, and students interested in participating in

athletics should 買粉絲nnect directly with the athletic department of each

indivial school. By recing the number of available supplements and

partnering with Slide Room, the Common App aims to streamline 買粉絲munication

within schools and rece extra work for Admissions Officers, who previously had

to physically sort through hundreds or thousands of additional

materials.

Purveyors of pricey jewellery and watches have been slow to embrace things digital. But last year’s social-media campaign to relaunch Panthère, a watch made by Cartier, a French jeweller, is evidence that they are waking up to the power of the online world. On January 22nd Richemont, a Swiss luxury 買粉絲nglomerate that 買粉絲unts Cartier among its brands, offered to buy the shares it does not already own in Yoox-Net-a-Porter group(YNAP), a leading luxury online retailer, for €2.7bn ($3.3bn). Although the deal still faces hurdles, it is likely to go ahead.

It would also increase the Swiss firm’s exposure to “soft luxury”, such as clothes and bags, a segment in which the firm has struggled, notes Melanie Floquet of JPMorgan Chase, a bank.

Cartier listened, and—eureka!—the wristwatch was born. Full ownership of YNAP should, Mr Rupert seems to reckon, allow Richemont to listen to its customers, in person or not.
