下面是兩種英語的不同點！

一、發音 (Pronunciation)

在發音方面，以 [r] 卷舌音為例，若是 [r] 出現在一個母音后面時，英國人一般就不發，但是講美式英語的人就會很清楚的發出此卷舌音。然而，美國波士頓 (Boston) 地區的人，亦如英國人不發出 [r] 音，他們會把 "park the car" 念成 "paak the caa"。其他差異還包括美式的 [o]，英式常發 [a] ( 如 hot)。而 advertisement, clerk, laboratory, schele 等字英美發音亦有差異。此外，美國人常會連音，因此，"Whaddaya say?" 不是一個字一個字被念成 "What did you say?" 而 gonna (= going to)、wanna (= want to)、smilin' (= smiling) 或 shinin' (= shining) 在口語與歌詞裏常此起彼落。然而，美國本地亦有區域發音上的差異，例如 either 的字首 i 有些地區念 「i」，有些地區則念成 「ai」。

二、拼法 (Spelling)

由於學術詞匯是紐西蘭威靈頓維多利亞大學的 Averil Coxhead 統計歸納出來的，因此其詞匯拼法為英式。英式英語和美式英語的拼法差異如下：

英式英語 -re 結尾，美式英語為 -er

例如：

中心 = centre vs. center，戲院 = theatre vs. theater，纖維 = fibre vs. fiber

英式英語 -our 結尾，美式英語為 -or

例如：

顏色 = 買粉絲lour vs. 買粉絲lor，勞動 = labour vs. labor (出現在學術詞匯表 Sublist 1)
