古人在九月農作物豐收之時祭天帝、祭祖，以謝天帝、祖先恩德的活動，這是重陽節作為秋季豐收祭祀活動而存在的原始形式。唐代是傳統節日習俗揉合定型的重要時期，其主體部分傳承至今。

古人重陽節的習俗介紹如下：

古代民間在重陽節有登高的風俗，故重陽節又叫“登高節”。重陽登高習俗源于此時的氣候特點以及古人對山岳的崇拜。

重陽節“登高”俗與道教九月九日“升天成仙”也有內在的聯系，在道教文化中，九月初九日重陽節這天是“升天成仙”的最好時間，所以道教傳說中多選擇九月九日“升天成仙”。道家認為這一天清氣上揚，濁氣下沉，地勢越高，清氣聚集越多，就可以乘清氣而升天。
