從傳播學角度來看，其實與傳統媒體對應的是新興媒體（新媒體），而社交媒體是從屬于新媒體范疇的一種媒體。僅從個人角度來闡述一下這二者的差異與聯系。

傳統媒體的主要載體就是電視、報紙、雜志、戶外廣告這幾類。

它的主要特點就是，公信力比較強，傳統受眾比較多，受眾群體比較穩定。傳統媒體的公信力是傳統媒體作為媒體行業所不可替代的一個特性。

我國的傳統媒體，尤其是指電視媒體，是由國家管控下的宣傳平臺，是國家控制輿論導向的喉舌部門。因此，傳統媒體所具的社會公信力是最強的，這是電視媒體作為傳統媒體與新興社交媒體最大的區別。舉個簡單的例子，如果老百姓想要知道國家新政策，新動向，政府新舉措，更傾向于收看電視新聞節目。

新媒體包括新興的社交媒體、自媒體等相對于傳統媒體，它的社會公信力要弱很多。

之所以說它公信力不高，一是因為它沒有沒有政府背景，二是因為社交媒體是一個開放性的平臺，任何人都可以在上面成為一個獨立的自媒體，發表自己的看法，這些看法并不具備公信力，也不具備完全的可考證性。因此，社交網站在這一方面是比較劣勢的。

雖然二者有著本質性差異，但是它們又有著相同的作用，及宣傳新聞內容和傳達大眾信息的作用。

然而，傳統媒體在與受眾之間的信息互動交流層面較之于社交媒體就要差很多。傳統媒體與大眾的的信息傳遞是單一向的，即傳統媒體傳達信息，但收不到大眾對于信息的反饋內容。而社交媒體與受眾之間是可以做到時時雙向互動的，這樣的信息交流可以相互反饋，方便大眾知曉并解決問題。

傳統媒體與社交媒體都是媒體，他們的社會分工不同，但是需要做到的信息傳遞任務卻是相同的，如果傳統媒體與社交媒體可以取長補短的話，效果可能會更好。
